The glossary is to aid in explaining the use of client-server architecture, XML, and the game of blackjack.

1.4 Overview

Blackjack a popular card game which comes with many unique terms - all of which a player should know and use. To completely understand the game and terminology one must read the complete set of blackjack rules (available here).

2. Definitions

2.1 Blackjack Terminology

Blackjack: A hand of which the first two cards dealt consist of an Ace and any 10-valued card.
Box: The betting area on the table layout for the placement of bets.
Box Number: The boxes are numbered from box one on the dealer's immediate left, through to box seven on the dealer's far right.
Break or Bust: To draw cards totaling more than 21, which immediately loses.
Discard Rack: The area of screen that used cards are placed after a hand has been played.
Double Down: To make an additional bet of up to the amount of the original wager only when the first two cards dealt total 9, 10, or 11. When a player doubles down, only one additional card is drawn.
Hard Hand: A hand which has only one total value.
Hit: To take an additional card(s) in order to improve the hand count.
Initial deal: The dealing of one card to each box containing a bet, followed by a card to the dealer, and then a second card to each box containing a bet.
Insurance: An optional bet available to a player when the dealers first card is an ace. Such a bet may not exceed one-half of the player's original wager. The payoff is 2 to 1 if the dealer makes a blackjack, if not the bet loses immediately.
Original bet: The wager made on a box prior to the first card being dealt
Payout: The money used to pay a winning bet.
Shoe: The device used to contain the decks while dealing.
Shuffle: The process of handling and randomly mixing the cards from the completion of one shoe to the beginning of the next shoe.
Soft Hand: A hand containing at least one ace, which when the ace is counted as either one or eleven can have two totals both under twenty-one.
Split: To make two hands out of one when the first two cards dealt are an identical pair. The original wager must be duplicated.
Stand: To decide not to take additional cards.
Stand off (Push): A tie between the player and the dealer, neither hand wins or loses.
