Design Decisions:

The reason for this choice of routers & switches are as follows:

Modular Router - Allows for specific amount of Gigabit cabling and the T1 POP connection
Modular Switches - Allows for necessary ports and cables
Collisions are minimised due to all devices being switches or routers which creates micro-segmentation
Patch panels included for completeness

The router and core switches (IDF switches) were chosen to support a higher speed backbone for the network, to reduce congestion problems throughout the network. The secondary reason was to allow for the potential inclusion of multimedia network traffic (to be used for the purposes of teaching the students) to be supported with minimal future upgrades required.

Design Compromises

Selecting a larger router would allow for higher speeds between VLAN's and for a potential increase in WAN connectivity upgrade (i.e. from a T1 connection to a T3 connection) & be able to support the increase in speed with minimal cost in upgrading.
- The advantage is the saving in cost.
CISCO1548U-DS is a real switch (and quite cheep) - but at a cost of $395 per classroom ($39,000 in total), proved a much more expensive option than using (inexpensive) hubs.
- The benefit is dedicated bandwith (100 Mbps!) to each student computer - every single computer in Acasia is now its own bandwidth domain.
In retrospect, we probably should have gone with hubs in each classroom and the money this saved could have gone towards a more expensive router (with better upgradability potential).
