Animal poems - Penguin
Penguin
... cute, comical, charismatic
On frozen landscape, there is a pronounced little moving speck.
You march like a little child in an over-sized suit,
Where are you going little penguin?
Waddling and tripping down the slippery isles, perhaps it is an arctic wedding you attend.
As you move, you seem obvious to the imposing size of the world compared to your tiny frame.
You are unencumbered by such thoughts of scale, you march along.
And your march is like a wonderful clumsy dance.
This is what makes you so adorable to all.
I would ask you if you are lost, yet somehow you always seem to find your way.
I see you from a distance now, but I desire to follow you to see if you go to visit your friends, to socialize or to visit the oceans edge.
Where are you going little penguin?
At this moment do you dream of delicious fish or of cuddling with family?
Cute as a button, and as comical as an army of little pies,
As you stand alongside the other penguin and you look so adorable I want to own and squeeze you,
You appear as a child who does not yet have a sentence to converse, but is perfectly happy to stand around, with head wobbling.
But then you surprise us all.
Entering the water, you become like a glossy bullet,
Twisting and turning, in the water like a nimble acrobatic.
Unlike most birds, you cannot soar above the land, yet under the water's surface you fly with ease.
Streamline by sea, but awkward by land.
The second those little webbed feet hit land, you are awkward again.
And I love you for it.
Where are you going little penguin?
Is your home the ocean, where you fly, or the land, where you sleep.
Should you choose to nest with me I will keep you warm and protect you from harm,
The scale of the world will melt away – I will huddle by your side, and rub my beak against yours.
For I am penguin too,
And in this big white landscape, you are the pronounced little speck that warms my heart from cold.

About this Poem... This is one in a serious of poems I've written about various animals. The motivation, is that I love the idea of spirit animals, and I decided, one day, to ask many of my friend what animal they think best represents their personality. In some cases the poems are written with the person in mind... and sometimes it's purely about the animal. Read more about my process here.
