Lion

     ... authoritative, powerful, predatory

A lioness stalks her prey.
She leaps forward, and the African antelope runs away.

And then the beat drops. Surpise!
There are lionesses all around, it is the antelope's demise.

Sharp teeth sink into a neck, and soon there is a feeding.
Let's focus however, on this predator's strong-suit and meaning.

A pride is both a matriarchy and patriarchy, the team is most powerful united.
A family of relentless warriors, wild and ignited.

As the cubs roll around and play, the pride watching in a careful manner.
Hyenas beware, of a strong predatory woman who rules the savannah.

As the sun sets over the horizon, and the grassland glows in crimson light.
The lioness is just waking up, and preparing for the roars of the night.

About this Poem...

Animal: Lion
Description/motivation: This poem isn't dedicated to anyone in particular. I just think a lot of people from the past have said "lion" or "lioness" as their spirit animal.

This is one in a serious of poems I've written about various animals. The motivation, is that I love the idea of spirit animals, and I decided, one day, to ask many of my friend what animal they think best represents their personality. In some cases the poems are written with the person in mind... and sometimes it's purely about the animal. Read more about my process here.
