Self Driving Cars

About

On most topics I write pretty long articles. For self driving cars, let me just say that I feel like Google (Waymo) dropped the ball a little to be moving so slowly to market. Three of their higher level employees were so frustrated they left to create Otto - which was the brilliant idea of solving the easier problem of self-driving trucks (easy highway miles)... only to be sued by Google for taking lots of IP with them. It's a complex race I'm not versed on enough to weigh in on... but we're occasionally getting funny pictures of self-driving cars that don't know what to do.

... And in this very rare case on March 22, 2023 at about 3pm... somehow a Cruise car hit a bus in Haight street in San Francisco. I didn't see it, but I heard it and witnesses said it was in self-driving mode, so this might be a hard one to explain! I just hope Cruise is very honest about it to explain what happened.

Silver Linings After the Crash

One good thing came of this. When the crash happened, I was actually talking to somone on the street about AI. I rushed over and later showed my photos to some homeless people and got another person to volunteer to be in our new book Homeless on Haight. Homeless people in SF see crazy stuff like this all the time, and some of them are surprisingly well versed on AI. As AI explodes we could see a lot more homeless people in SF, was a joke one of them made. Today AI failed, so your tech jobs are safe.... for one more day. See you soon.
