The 0 to 10 "Besotted scale" below is a reminder of what it feels like to be in love. It's a rare thing, so if it happens to you, celebrate it!
My Graphical Representation of the "Besotted Scale" (0-10)
The idea: Besotted is an old-fashioned word, and honestly, I feel like fewer and fewer people talk about falling deeply in love. It's like the world got a bit cold, skeptical or both. And yet... I'm still a believer. Around the world, people fall head over heels every day. They meet someone who enchants them, and hopefully, the enchantment is mutual.
Using this Scale
This chart is a whimsical way to think about where you are at. Do I suggest sending it to the object of your desire? Maybe not! And that's really interesting, because with most of my scales, I say communication is key, and you should share and discuss your feelings with your partner or even potential partner.... but in today's world, people seem so dang intent on playing it cool, and into games... only you can be the judge of whether or not your person will be excited to hear you're into them. Or freak out! Or maybe they'll decide they are higher on the scale than you, and might be offended.
It's all ridiculous, of course, but I just don't want this scale to backfire on anybody. So, rather than share this with your crush, fumble around with them like you might normally, hoping you say the right combination of words that they’ll like you back, and a relationship might start. Instead, use this scale among friends to laugh about or communicate your feelings in the present and in the past. Think about what it means to really be in love.
Even if the object of your desire doesn't like you back, or disappoints you, or move to the Sunshine Coast (which happened to me more than once in one year with two different girls to me)... isn't it better to have felt alive than to not feel at all? I look back at every time I was besotted as a point of pride. If the alternative is to be cold, then I would rather be a fool in love. Every time.
Sincerely,
Andrew Noske
