NEWSFLASH: I've also published a shorter version of this article to medium.com! Please support me by adding a "clap" at: The Narcissism Scale |
This scale is based on my Narcissists article, and I wrote it shortly after a friend realized she was dating a narcissist who was cheating on her the whole time. Hey, it happens to the best of us, but wouldn't it be nice to try to identify people who we should be wary of. I'm not saying all narcissists are bad people here by the way. They can be forces of nature, and get shit done. You wouldn't want to be an employee of Elon Musk, but he has shaken up the electric vehicle industry.
My Graphical Representation of the "Narcissism Scale" (0-10)
Everyone is a little "Narcissist"
I think one of the importance of these scales is to realize that there is no binary here. Oh sure, there are test for Narcissistic Personality Disorder, but all of us exhibit some signs of narcissism. Ever boasted in a way that makes the hero of the story? Ever exaggerated your talents? Ever seeked praise for something you did? Ever taken a selfie? Okay maybe the last one is just vain, but the point is nobody is zero on this scale. And maybe nobody is 10. Narcissists are often so buried in insecurities that they don't even realize there is something wrong with them. Denial. Thing Donald Trump. Some people can be so amazing good at lying that they don't blink, and they believe their own lies. For the rest of us we can't imagine lying without some kind of guilt. Well some people can lie without guilt, and you shouldn't feel too bad for falling for their tricks occasionally. Just learn to recognize patterns and read up about Narcissists. In doing so you'll realize that we all lie a little sometimes. We are all a little selfish sometime.
One key distinction is if you find yourself caring for others. That too fits on an Empathy Scale.
