Here are some of the sites I've found and considered worth bookmarking. It's not a complete copy of my favourite's list, but it's probably over half.

• Academic - probably only interest you if you're doing honours or postgrad.
  • Google scholar http://scholar.google.com/ - only became available after I finished my degree in 2004 - wish it had been earlier.
  • ACM http://www.acm.org/ biggest (probably best) database of computer papers. They charge for membership & papers, but our uni had a porthole which gave you access as a member - most unis should.
  • CiteSeer http://citeseer.nj.nec.com/cs - Not too bad - database of many computer papers
  • DBLP author search http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/db/indices/a-tree/index.html - enter an authors name and you'll see most of his publications.
  • Dictionary of Algorithms and Data Structures (NIST) http://www.nist.gov/dads/
  • Australian & American spelling differences http://www.peterjerrim.com/OzUSvocabspell.html - interesting to note - spell checker won't catch them all.

  • Useful Free Programs
    • MySQL-Front 2.5 http://mysqlfront.phpsoft.it/ - Rather than use MySQL commands, this give a free gui (bit like access); I like it.
    • MSN Messenger http://messenger.msn.com/ - It just what everyone uses.
    • Skype http://www.skype.com/ - good voice over IP program (read up about it) - possibly not the best. If you long distance call someone a lot, use this computer-to-computer for free... haven't tried compuer-to-phone yet (they do charge a small amout for this).
    • Winamp http://www.winamp.com/ - everyone uses WinAMP!
    • WinSCP http://winscp.sourceforge.net/ - great free program to let you ftp/ssh files to remote computer - I use it to upload files to this site (although dreamweaver is also good for that).
    • Bit Tornado http://www.bittornado.com/ - haven't tried it yet, a friend say's it better than eMule.
    • EMule http://www.emule-project.net/ - is a hack of eDonkey; a file sharing program which let you search and download lots of files (napster for anything). I did find speeds were very slow, and anything in your download directory, is free for people to upload - which uses your upload limit/time like crazy, so you have to clear it out often. Not bad though.
    • Google Toolbar http://toolbar.google.com/ - install this, it blocks popups and all other good stuff (several others make similar bars, but this one is my favourite - google rocks!).
    • GetRight http://www.getright.com/ - manages downloads of files from the web.
    • AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ - run this every so often to find and eliminate spyware.
  • Other Good Programs - (most of these you are *supposed* to pay for)
    • WebCopier http://www.maximumsoft.com/ - once this thing was free, but now its trialware.
    • Better File Rename http://publicspace.net/windows/BetterFileRename/ - select files in Explorer - right-click, and then you can rename them in batch. I find this tool essential for renaming image thumnails etc.
  • Information Sites
    • PC Flank http://www.pcflank.com/ - can help you determine how secure you're PC is. Maybe you need a firewall. :)

• Search Engines - ...
  • Google http://www.google.com.au/ - the best search engine! The guys behind google are brilliant, and the resources HUGE. This is set as my homepage. I recomment using their image search whenever you need a specific picture/image/clipart.
  • Yahoo http://au.yahoo.com/ - is more of a "directory", so it's good in that respect.
  • About.com http://www.about.com/ - "human internet" is worth looking at too - it has an expert in most field which write about the topic.
  • Vivisimo Clustering http://vivisimo.com/ - clusters results into topics! Nifty engine.
