Tips for Internet Surfing:

Basic Tips:

  • Organize your favourites into folder (a bit like below maybe).
  • It's my belief google is the best seach engine - so use it. Be specific in searches, and learn to use advanced features includings double quotes and symbols.
  • Google image search rocks!!! If I need an image I use google image search - I rarely use clipart anymore.
  • Google can tell you the answer to almost any programming question you have, it's usually faster than a book, but at the same time, if you can't find the answer in ten minutes you probably won't find it in an hour. It's like fishing in that respect.
  • Install the google task bar to block all those horrible pop-ups and has many other great features (highlighting, auto-compelete, search box etc). You might also like to use ad-blocking software, but it can sometimes make pages look funny.
  • Many sites - code sites expecially - ask you to register. Even though it's free, it's a pain; especially when it comes to remembering all these different usernames and passwords. My solution is to include the username and password in my favourites list/bookmark name: for example "Seek {u=swan,p=gullible}". Only do this at sites where no-one you're not worried about people seeing your password over your shoulder.... (eg: for a code site no-one cares).

More Advanced Tips:

  • Downloading files. You can right click to most files, but the danger of downloading big files (several MB) is you might lose the whole thing, espcially if you have a slow connection (it might time out, or you disconnect for any reason). Getright is a good program which can manage downloads, big downloads faster, and you can stop, and continue you them at a later time.
  • Peer-to-peer download programs are great for finding files (espcially music), but many come with spyware, and they are often pretty slow, and you'll often be sharing more files than you may think/want. But the fact you can search, download, and just let in run in the background is awesome - my friend used it to download entire television series.
  • If you frequenly need/visit a site (for example lecture notes) - consider saving the website to disk - that way you can access it quickly and offline. I use to use WebCopier, but now they charge for it (doh!). A free one is called SuperBot, but I'm sure it's not the best.
  • Spyware is a big problem these days. AdAware is a free program, you can and should use regularly to help you find and remove spyware.
