01/06 | FINALLY
... a new phone!
Hey everyone! I FINALLY did it! After months complaining that my old phone
was slow and losing messages ... after months of talking about getting a new
phone I finally did it. It was kind of sad to see my old phone go in a way.
Don't get me wrong - it wasn't half as sad as selling my old car - but I think
it's funny how we get attached to inanimate object and felt almost guilty
getting rid of it - tossing it aside and trying something more new and fresh.
When I started playing with my new phone I got over it though! It's a Nokia
6280, and I'm with the 3G network. I figured I was paying about $30 a month
with my old vodaphone thing, it made sense to go on a plan - $10 over 24 months
+ $29 cap ..... yep, I now understand most of the mobile phone lingo. I was
encouraged somewhat by Alby (who just bought the same phone and did all the
research), but it was my old friend Kimberli who suggested it in the first
place ... *months* ago when I visited. I have a $120 cap, I think I'll call
her and tell her I took her advice.
It has HEAPS of features, but one of the best is it takes 2 MegaPixel pictures!!
My first digital camera (up until I got a new one last christmas) took 2 MP
pictures! .... Amazing how technology condenses. It also has radio, streaming
video, games, news, video calling, pretty much everything except a GPS and
garden spade .... hrmmm maybe I should have gone with the garden space option.
In other news I bought a new heater - my old one was busted. Not quite as
exciting as a mobile phone. ;-)
01/06 | Tristan
visit
My first visitor ...... yay! No wait .... technically I've had lots of visitors
stay in my room, but Tristan was the first non-family member to do so, and
he came over about 2 weeks ago in May. We had a great time too .... Alby,
Jim, Jon and I took him clubbing on the first night. We also played some interesting
drinking games; leading me to get quite seriously drunk (for perhaps the second
time in my life), but luckily we stopped the card games and played a game
of "never ever" where I had a chance to sober up and watch everyone
else consume (if you used the word "drink" you had to consume a
mouthful). I danced with a couple of girls that night while clubbing; one
was really good too; but naturally they both had boyfriends, and I got the
evil eye from one .... so I did the gentlemanly thing, stopped dancing and
got the hell out of there! Better I get just an evil eye than a black eye.
:-)
The day after our big clubbing night was great. We met some friends and spent
the day at Roma Street parklands. We spent all afternoon just lying on the
grass, kicking a football and playing guitar. The funny thing though was when
I kicked the football into the lake. I'm normally coordinated at all ... honest!
I know how to kick a football - it was Jon's fault for letting it bounce.
Anyhow, doesn't matter who's fault ..... the water wasn't swimmable so I waited
half an hour for the wind to blow it to the far side of the lake. At that
stage I was worried it was going to blow back into the middle ... so I threw
rocks at it, so the ripples would push it toward the side, where anther guy
- Brendan, was leaning from a boardwalk trying to reach it! It was a long
battle, but eventually he reached the thing, and something unexpected happen.
Suddenly there was a big applause. I kid you not!
We looked across the other side of the river, and sure enough all the picnickers
had been watching us for the last half-hour trying to get our ball back and
were all clapping for us ... however it wasn't just the picnickers making
noise. We looked up, and on the boardwalk above us there was a huge gathering
of people (mostly tourists I suspect) watching down on us and cheering. It
was really cool! It's not everyday you get big applause from strangers - especially
in a picnic situation. Roma street parkland is a really lovely spot - we'll
have to do the picnic thing again I think. I reckon it was probably the best
weekend I'd had all year - so Tristan will have to visit more often. With
his new job I'm sure he can afford it .... he and big Jon can shout all us
poor students drinks. Cheers.
01/06 | Jim
leaves to Sweden soon - and will be replaced by another girl
Is good yah? It's official - Jim is going to Sweden (as part of his architecture
course) at the end of this semester ... and leave behind a vacant space ...
the place where he would sleep like a cat all morning and purr when you touched
his head. Our new housemate will be Keiren - Kimberley's baby sister (Kimberley
was our latest housemate at the start of the year and fellow PhD student).
Keiren seems really nice - and not as weird as her older vegetarian sister
(hey Kimberley!) - so it should all be good .... although - with three girls
and three boys again the males will quickly lose the balance of power we've
taken for granted. Anyhow, with any luck the house will still run as smoothly
and we will enjoy the same peaceful, (relatively) conflict-free environment
we've had for the first part of the year. I think I'll miss Jim though; the
man has a certain happy charm about him. I'm sure he'll love Sweden though.
